Miniaturized gas-solid fluidized beds

چکیده

Fluidized beds are suspensions of grains by ascending fluids in tubes, and commonly used industry given their high rates mass heat transfers between the solids fluid. Although usually employed large scales (tube diameter order meter), fluidized have a great potential much smaller (order millimeter) for processes involving powder fluids. Of particular interest is pharmaceutical industry, which can take advantage mm-scale promoting diffusion species, classifying grains, or peeling individual particles. This paper reports experiments with gas-solid bed, consisted 0.5-mm-diameter glass particles suspended an air flow 3-mm-ID tube. We filmed bed high-speed camera processed images numerical code tracking both entire found that instabilities form alternating high- low-compactness regions (known respectively as plugs bubbles) appear fluctuating energy granular temperature) relatively low within plugs. Therefore, reduced agitation transfer when compared to m-scale counterparts. show also increasing velocity does not avoid appearance plugs, though temperature increases, mitigating problem. Our results shed light on detailed mechanisms taking place miniaturized providing insights chemical powders.

Heat Transfer Mechanisms in a Gas – Liquid-Solid Fluidized Beds

Three-Phase Fluidized Beds have found an important place in processing technology as Reactors. Gas-Liquid-Solid fluidization is considered in the present paper as operating bed of fluidized solid particles simultaneously with co-current upward flow of a continuous liquid phase and a gaseous phase dispersed in the form of bubbles. In the present study, the experimental work of the author on heat...

Hybrid Two-Fluid DEM Simulation of Gas-Solid Fluidized Beds

Simulations of gas-solid fluidized beds have been performed using a hybrid simulation method, which couples the discrete element method (DEM) for particle dynamics with the averaged two-fluid (TF) continuum equations for the gas phase. The coupling between the two phases is modeled using an interphase momentum transfer term. The results of the hybrid TF-DEM simulations are compared to experimen...

Hysteresis and packing in gas-fluidized beds

The packing fraction and the pressure drop across gas-fluidized beds of granular media exhibit hysteresis as the gas-flow rate is cycled up and down across the fluidization transition. Presumably this is due to contact forces and transfer of stress to the surrounding walls, and hence should vary nontrivially with the aspect ratio of the sample. Here we present systematic measurements of the var...

Particle pressures in gas-fluidized beds

The particle pressure is the surface force that is exerted due to the motion of particles and their interactions. This paper describes measurements of the particle pressure exerted on the sidewall of a gas-fluidized bed. As long as the bed remains in a packed state, the particle pressure decreases with increasing gas velocity as progressively more of the bed is supported by fluid forces. It app...

Effect of Bed Diameter on the Hydrodynamics of Gas-Solid Fluidized Beds

Effect of scale on the hydrodynamics of gas-solid fluidized beds was investigated in two fluidized beds of 152 mm and 78 mm in diameter.  Air at room temperature was used as the fluidizing gas in the bed of sand particles. The Radioactive Particle Tracking (RPT) technique was employed to obtain the instantaneous positions of the particles at every 20 ms of the experiments. These data were u...
